Discover:

  • Jesus tells his disciples that he did not tell them certain things from the beginning. What things is Jesus referring to (think about what he has told them in chapters 13–15) and why did he not tell them these things until now?
  •  In verse 7, Jesus tells the disciples that it is an advantage to them that he goes away. How is it an advantage to them? What happens as a result of Jesus going away?
  • When Jesus admits to using figures of speech, what is he referring to? What has he been talking about in figures of speech?

Respond:

  • In troubling times when the world seems to fall apart around you, is it easy to forget that God is in control? Why or why not?
  • In times of trial and difficulty, why do people abandon God? Have you ever struggled to cling to God in difficult times? 
  • Take a moment and say a prayer of thanks to God for giving the Holy Spirit to do his work in you and in the world around you. Ask God to guide you in the truth and work through you to glorify Jesus as you live for him this week.

  • When Jesus says “I am the true vine,” what is he claiming about himself? Who is the vinedresser? What does the vinedresser do to care for and provide for the vineyard? 
  • What is the key to producing fruit in the life of a Christian? What must they do in order to bear much fruit? Vs 5. What does it look like for someone to “abide in Jesus”? 
  • When Jesus talks about joy, is he talking about happiness? What is the basis for the kind of joy that Jesus wants for his disciples?

Respond:

  • How does vs 18 make you feel? What should you take away from vs 21?
  • Make a commitment to strengthen your attachment to Jesus. This week make a decision to obey his commands, study God’s Word, meet together with other Christians for times of fellowship and prayer, and devote yourself completely to Jesus.

  • How does verse 12 inspire you? What is Jesus’ meaning?
  • Notice verse 31. What does Jesus say about his willingness to obey the Father and how that testifies to the love he has for the Father?

  • What does the Holy Spirit specifically do to help the disciples take the Gospel message forward? Vs 26. How does this help you understand the nature of the Bible? 
  • Does the indwelling of the Holy Spirit help you live the Christian life? In what ways has the Holy Spirit helped you in your Christian life?
