Count The Cost

I love the continual challenge that I am receiving from our Quest books through scripture. Every week there are scriptures that punch me in the face and there are quotes that make me sit back and ponder what’s really going on in my life. This week was no exception as there was a scripture and a quote that challenged me to move forward into a deeper understanding of my relationship with God. (Continue Reading Here)

MONDAY, MARCH 21

Connect: John 3:1-21

DISCOVER:

  • What important group was Nicodemus part of?
  • Why did he visit Jesus by night?

RESPOND:

  • In what way does Nicodemus misunderstand Jesus?
  • What does it mean to be born of water and the spirit?
  • What does the comparison to wind and a born-again believer mean?

TUESDAY, MARCH 22

Connect: 1 Samuel 10 & 13

DISCOVER:

  • Compare the Saul of 1 Samuel chapter 10 with the Saul of 1 Samuel chapter 13.
  • Are there any hints in chapter 10 that Saul would fail to rise to the challenge of kingship?

RESPOND

  • No situation excuses disobedience. Even in stressful or dangerous times God expects us to follow his commands. Our actions must always be compelled by the Word and not by circumstances. Take time today to pray for believers in Ukraine and all who face trials, that they would prove faithful.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23

Connect: Acts 10

DISCOVER:

  • Who was Cornelius? What were he and his family like?
  • What happened while Peter was praying on the roof? What did he see?
  • What was the message from the voice from Heaven? How did Peter react?
  • Who were “those of the circumcision” (Acts 10:45)? Why were they “astonished”?

RESPOND:

  • Under the old covenant there was a wall of partition between the inner circle of the Jews and the outer circle of the Gentile God-fearers. Now all believers are in the innermost circle, a point made clear to Peter when the Holy Spirit baptized Cornelius and affirmed by Peter when he baptized Cornelius with water. When was the last time you stayed with or invited into your home a Christian from another social class, race or country?

THURSDAY, MARCH 24

Connect: Romans 2

DISCOVER:

  • In Romans 1 Paul expounded on the point of “sin” in the gospel, what is he expounding on here?
  • In the last chapter, we saw that Creation keeps people from having an excuse to avoid God’s judgment. How about this chapter?
  • Where does our conscience come from?

RESPOND:

  • When you think of the term “religious person” , who comes to mind? Can you describe or list the characteristics of this person?
  • What does it mean to be born again? We’re asking about the personal experience, not the theological definition.
  • What keeps people in general, or you specifically from being born again?
  • In what areas of your life have you tried to be a secret disciple? Have you ever been embarrassed about your faith or afraid to share it openly?

FRIDAY, MARCH 25

Connect: John 3:1-21

DISCOVER:

  • What two aspects of the new birth did Jesus identify in?
  • What gift did God give to the world, and what motivated the gift?
  • Why do some men hate light (truth), but other men love it?

RESPOND:

  • Some people say the “water” in v5 refers to physical birth. How would you respond? How did the subject of physical birth enter this discussion?
  • Does any other command of God require water besides baptism?

SATURDAY, MARCH 26

Connect: James 2

DISCOVER:

  • What does James say is wrong about respect of persons in 2:4?
  • By what law will we be judged?

RESPOND:

  • What other problems that can be caused in relationships between people if some show respect of persons?
  • Define “mercy,” and think about how it relates to respect of persons.

SUNDAY, MARCH 27

Connect: John 19

DISCOVER:

  • What did people say when they saw Jesus? What did Pilate tell them to do?
  • What did the Jews say then that made Pilate afraid?
  • What power did Pilate claim to have over Jesus?

RESPOND:

  • Pilate’s question “what is truth?” also betrays his lack of concern for the facts. Fallen people are willing to bend the truth in order to advance or protect themselves. Christians, however, must not imitate their example. Pray today that you will always love truth and proclaim it even when it is uncomfortable.
