1 Samuel 7

  • In verse 3, we learn why the Israelites are not in relationship with the Lord. The Israelites though, seem ready to turn toward the Lord. What are Samuel’s requirements for turning to the Lord?

  • What do the Israelites do once they have gathered at Mizpah? How do they show their repentance to the Lord?

  • What can we learn from Samuel’s ministry as it is described in verses 16 and 17? Does he expect people to come to him? Does he forsake his family for his work? How is his life a model for us?

  • Is there or has there been something in your life that is/was like an idol that you were not willing to give up? How does/did that affect your relationship with the Lord?

  • What does it mean to fast? Why would it be a good thing to fast from food or other things from time to time?

  • Spend some time praying that God would show you if there is anything keeping you from worshipping the Lord with all your heart.

1 Samuel 6

  • How was God able to use the superstition of the Philistines and two cows to accomplish His purpose in this passage?

  • How did the Israelites respond to the return of the Ark?

  • What was wrong with how the Israelites responded in verses 20-21? How is this similar to the way that the Philistine’s responded to God’s judgment in their lives?

  • In what ways do people still try to appease God in order to find relief from His judgment and their guilt? In what ways do people still try to deal with God on their terms? Have you ever done this? Why and how?

  • In what ways has God gifted you and called you to serve Him with your life? How is this a tremendous privilege? Are you serving Him with a heart of thankfulness and joy that matches the gift He’s given you?

1 Samuel 16

  • What do you learn from God’s question to Samuel about grieving over Saul? What was God’s point?

  • What was the difference between Samuel and God’s criteria of choosing the new King?

  • Why did God tell Samuel to go to Jesse rather than just to find the boy named David directly? What was He teaching Samuel?

  • Why does God often choose the younger or weaker to serve Him?

  • How does God use experiences in your life to teach discernment of the heart rather than outward appearances?

  • Pray that we learn from Samuel, to not let fear keep us from serving and obeying God. Pray that we learn from God, to discern the heart of others.
